Attraction development

Getting a design ‘right’ in one try is virtually impossible. I apply an iterative proactive approach in which success and failure are equally important. I will illustrate this by explaining how I got to the the final mixing barrel prototype. After the first week of the project, my first prototype was finished and evaluated. The shadow wall idea translated body movement to music expression by interpreting the shadows of the park guests. The following movie shows the scaled down prototype.

The interaction shows the differences in personal expression. I scaled up the interaction to a full sized prototype and noticed that the interaction was still limited to covering sensors by using the hands. I went back to the drawing board. After the factory theme was selected, the interface got a proper place in the music production process as a mixing barrel. I decided to accentuate on the use of body movement and posture by visualizing the silhouettes of the park guests on a screen by using video recognition. Adding effects to the music was translated to the mixing barrel analogy as pumping bubbles into the barrel and popping them with the silhouettes. The form language was applied and the prototype was built to serve as a testing platform to further improve the interaction.
